Went to see the Bees movie tonite.  As this is one of my favorite books of all time, I was somewhat skeptical that it could live up to the book and figured that the casting of Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah would be too much star power and detract from the story.  I had no concerns about Dakota Fanning filling the part of Lily – I knew that was a perfect fit the first time I heard she had the role. I was impressed with the job Paul Betany did playing Lily’s father – nailed it.  I thought all the sisters were good, particularly May and thought Jennifer Hudson played her part very well.  The setting was much as I had imagined it, although I don’t recall that the house was a two-story, but perhaps so.

If you haven’t listened to or read the book yet, do yourself a favor and get a copy of the audiobook narrated by Jenna Lamia – she puts the perfect voice to Lily.

All in all, I give it up two thumbs up – great acting, great production.

Just finished Khalid Hosseini’s “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. Outstanding book, well narrated by Atossa Leoni. Some books you can lose interest in, but not this one – kept me constantly listening. It will be interesting to see if they make a movie out of this one. No doubt, I’m sure. The book certainly gives you an appreciation of what women endure on the other side of the world (not to disparage those who live on this side of the world!).

If you haven’t listened or read either of Khalid’s books, you should do yourself a favor. Not only is it excellent writing, but it leads to a better understanding of the people who are living in those countries, where turmoil is the word of the day.

If you’ve read the book, “The Kite Runner”, but haven’t seen the movie yet, do yourself a favor and check it out. It is truly an amazing adaption of a book, the best I can remember in a long time. Many of the scenes I imagined in the book, were practically duplicated in the film. The choice of actors was also superb and the “extra features” on the DVD were well worth watching. Marc Forster, who directed “Monster’s Ball” with Hallie Berry and “Finding Neverland” and the upcoming new James Bond film, has created a beautiful film here. You can now rent this at Redbox for $1. Of further note, the actress Atossa Leoni, who plays Amir’s wife Soraya , is the narrator of Hosseini’s “A Thousand Splendid Suns” in audiobook format.
